Enhance the efficiency of merchant portfolio management.

Objective

This project was to come up with a mobile app to enhance merchant portfolio management for PayPal.

Idea

Design the iOS version of the PayPal Merchant app by enhancing it from its web-based application.

High-level goals

Key Project Enhancements

  • Make it fast and easy to use for all merchant portfolio managers.
  • Give users more control and visibility over their risks, growth and retention data.
  • Offer in-app experience for ease of access.
Approach

Analyse existing product

From the start, the client was required to create an iOS app based on their existing web application. To comply with the client’s agreement, access to the web application was limited only to screenshots. I began by analysing the data and features and planned my solution around those.

I carried out design research to explore ways to display data on iOS mobile devices, identified required features from the existing system and formulated the visual language based on my research result.

The Design

I sketched out the Initial design ideas on paper first. Once I had finalised the design approach, I used the Sketch app to create different UI components for various features.

Design stage

Design Iterations

For the iOS app design, I based it on the existing web application functionalities as it was part of the mandatory requirements and re-created the design journey flow for the new iOS tablet and mobile apps.

Finally, the design was shared through Zeplin for the client’s approval and re-iterated accordingly. Once the final design was approved, I held several design review sessions with the developers to minimise design inconsistency of the final product.

Conclusion

The new Merchant app was ready to launch and with only weeks to go the client surprisingly pulled out of the project. If the app was launched as scheduled it would have provided a new way of sharing data on the go for the sales operation people.

That would have contributed to the uplift of the sales productivity and ultimately would have increased the revenues and profits of the company.
